Virtual Sea and Cake Resources 2020
Welcome to the resources page for Virtual Sea and Cake 2020. Unfortunately we can't get together for summer sea shanties this year, so we have decided to do some virtual ones instead. We do hope that you will participate by submitting a video!
All the resources you need to participate are on this page, but if you would like a little more help, Martin Jones will be running some online workshops. (See out
home page for details). The
home page also contains more general information and background about the project.
We are going to compile virtual choir videos for two shanties, Whip Jamboree and Tom's gone to Hilo.
This page is divided into 6 sections. (Please could you check out the instructions before making your videos....!)

Video Instructions
Please could you make two videos of yourself singing your part of the two shanties. It doesn’t matter if you don’t get every note perfect, the overall effect will be brilliant. I also want to reassure you that I won’t be listening to individual performances. Your video will be processed and you will become Soprano 009 or Tenor 005, then your contribution will be combined with the others to make the full performance videos.
The two songs have very different styles. For Whip Jamboree, we want the boisterous nature of the song to come out, whereas Tom’s Gone to Hilo should sound soulful and haunting. Please don’t sing them too "nicely" - you are all supposed to be sailors!
Making the recording
You will need 2 devices (phone, tablet, laptop or computer) and a pair of headphones*. You should play the guide track, (preferably using the YouTube video but you can use the audio file if you prefer, they are the same) on one device using headphones and sing along! Ideally, we don’t want drum beats audible on your video.
The second device should be used to record your performance as a video. When setting up the video:
- Try to find a way to hold or prop up the recording device so that it is not moving
- Your video will be cropped to something looking similar to a passport photograph format, so please make sure there is enough of you showing(!) and please try not to move around too much or you will bob in and out of shot! As much as is practical, sing facing square on to the camera. Something like this would be ideal!
- If you are singing from the music, or a wordsheet, please try to keep it out of view
- Please record indoors
- Feel free to dress in nautical apparel if that appeals... Pirates/sailors/submariners are all welcome
That is our ideal, but we appreciate that situations vary...! So please do the best you can, but the most important thing is that we want you to be a part of the performance!
* if you really can’t get hold of headphones, please play the backing track quietly and try to get you recording device closer to you than the device playing the backing track
Sending me your videos
Please send your videos between the 26th August and 5th September.
You can email them to martin@woodlandquarter.co.uk or use WhatsApp to 07702 252424. If you have any difficulties please email us, and we will help with ways to do this.
We will acknowledge all videos received. If you don’t get a confirmation by 6th September, please get in contact to check we received it.
We would like to put your name on the credits, so it is really helpful if you can put your name in the WhatsApp message or email as you would like it to appear...!
We will aim to publish the finished video around the 12th/13th September.
